About the scheme

A UK Government-backed baseline for common cyber threats.

Cyber Essentials is the minimum cyber security standard recommended by the UK Government for organisations of all sizes. It focuses on five technical controls that reduce exposure to the most common internet-based attacks.

Cyber Essentials is assessed through a verified self-assessment. Cyber Essentials Plus uses the same requirements, then adds a technical audit to verify the controls are in place.

Firewalls

Boundary and device firewalls help block unauthorised access to systems and services.

Secure configuration

Devices, cloud services, and software should be configured safely, with unnecessary features removed or disabled.

User access control

Accounts, privileges, and administrative access should be limited to the people who genuinely need them.
